A series of walks following remote paths in the Pyrenees in a small group of 6 to 14 with an experienced guide. Immersed in spectacular views and mountain lakes, track bears, marmots and chamois. Overnight in mountain refuges, your donkey carries your bag. Daily distances vary according weather and group variations.

Rail Travel

Outward: Requires an overnight stay in Pau on Saturday night. St Pancras International, change station in Paris, arrive Pau late afternoon. Early afternoon bus from Pau to Etsaut with change at Oloron Ste Marie.

Return: Mid-day bus to Pau. Train to Paris and overnight stay (additional cost). Monday Eurostar to St Pancras International station.

  • Day 1 Arrive in Etsaut
    • A warm welcome at the Gite-Auberge. Meet your donkey and take a short walk to stretch your legs before your evening meal with the guide.
  • Day 2 Chemin de la Mature
    • A circuit walk to Fort du Portalet and returning from the Col d’Arras by the forestry track Chemin de la Mature. Collect your picnic lunch before setting off in the morning.
  • Day 3 Towards Lescun via Lhers
    • Follow the trans Pyrenean Grande Randonnée 10 to the village of Lescun. Through woodland and agricultural plateaux and spending the night at Lhers.
  • Day 4 Crests and peaks
    • Spend much of the day along the Spanish border and reach the Lac d’Arlet at 2000m where swimming is possible.
  • Day 5 Shepherds and their Flock
    • Cross the plains of Banasse and round the Val d’Aspe meet a family of shepherds and join them for a bite to eat, tasting the renowned cheeses of the region. Cross the route of Compostella pilgrims.
  • Day 6 Summits of l’Ossau
    • Today experience one of the most celebrated views of the Pyrenees: The reflection of the peak of Ossau in the Lac d’Ayous. Spend the night in the refuge cabin and swim in the lake.
  • Day 7 Clo d’Ayous and Plateau des Gentianes
    • Today a truly impressive walk to the pastures of Peyrenere and the end of your journey. Transfer for your final night back in Estaut.
