Route Map

Rail Travel

Outward: Depart St Pancras International station, change stations in Paris and trains at Clermont Ferrand, arrive Brioude late afternoon.

Return: Taxi transfer to station and train or bus to Brioude then train to Vichy. Next day, train to Paris, change stations, arrive St Pancras International early evening.

  • Day 1 Arrive in Brioude
    • A warm welcome at Hôtel Sapinière.
  • Day 2 Brioude to Reilhac - 12 miles (19.2km)
    • Taxi transfer to start your walk at Villeneuve and continue through the gorge to Lavoute-Chilhac for a lunchtime break before continuing through woodland along volcanic cinder pathways to Reilhac and the Hôtel Val d’Allier.
  • Day 3 Reilhac to Saugues - 12 miles (19.2km)
    • Taxi transfer to start the walk in Pebrac, where you can visit the 12th cent Monastery. You leave the Allier through rolling farmland to reach Saugues, famed for the diversity of mushroom recipes – buy them fresh, roasted, pickled, sun-dried or smoked! Stay at the delightful Hôtel la Terrasse.
  • Day 4 Day Trip from Saugues - 10 miles (16km)
    • A peaceful stroll along quiet lanes and farm tracks to the tranquil village of Grèzes. Stepping into a forgotten rural scene.
  • Day 5 Saugues to Pont d’Alleyras - 10 miles (16km)
    • Quiet lanes through peaceful countryside passing castles, lakes and mills before descending to return to the Allier valley and Pont d’Alleyras. Hôtel du Haut Allier boasts a Michelin starred restaurant.
  • Day 6 Visit Vichy
    • Take the train or drive to Vichy and enjoy a gentle stroll to discover this delightful spa town, once the wartime seat of the French Government. Stay at the Hôtel les Nations and choose your own evening restaurant. B&B.
  • Day 7 Depart
    • Take the train to Paris or drive home.
    • VICHY SPA
    • Vichy is a delightful Spa town. You may wish to round off your holiday with a special spa treatment and an extra night in Vichy before departing for home. Telephone for options and prices.
