Normandy and Mayenne
- Day 1
Arrive to a warm welcome from your hosts plus a bottle of AOC Pays d’Auge Cider with time before dinner to explore this delightful 18th century manor house lovingly transformed into a charming hotel and gourmet restaurant.Your hosts the Harfaux family delight in inviting visitors to view their wonderful impressionist and cubist art collection. Make your way to the conservatory to choose from the a la carte menu prepared by Chef Philippe Harfaux.
- Day 2
After breakfast the chef will take you on a tour of his kitchen garden with more than 100 different varieties of vegetables, citrus fruits and root vegetables. Breathe in the rich fragrance of rare aromatic herbs and spices, learning how to smell, handle and recognise each plant. The aromatic plants and old fashioned vegetables become the base for creating exciting recipes.
In the afternoon its time to hone your cookery skills by joining the chef in his kitchen and learn how to concoct some delicious dishes from local produce, of course, with the addition of apples, cider and calvados which give local dishes their distinctive flavours. You’ll take an active role in the preparation of the menu you will eat tonight in the comfort of the elegant terrace restaurant.
- Day 3
- Today learn how cider is made and try some of the local varieties plus some aromatic calvados. It takes 18 kilos of cider apples to make 13 litres of cider and 13 litres of cider to make 1 litre of calvados! After lunch enjoy a free afternoon to relax by the heated swimming pool or visit Cambremer and the Jardins du Pays d’Auge and Maisons à Pans de Bois. Explore the three interlinked “rooms” comprising a water garden, a Japanese garden and a romantic English garden. The second garden has three successive terraces punctuated by topiary yews, opening into a border of grasses and ending in a small arboretum and boxwood maze. Tonight - another chance to sample a delicious gourmet menu.
- Day 4
- After breakfast its time to head off maybe with your boot full of cider to translate your new found cookery skills into delicious meals for friends and family.
