Rail Travel

Outward: Depart St Pancras International station, change stations in Paris to arrive in Angoulême late afternoon. Transfer to hotel included (20 mins).

Return: Transfer to Angoulême, change stations in Paris, arrive St Pancras International station late afternoon.

  • Day 1 Arrival Massignac
    • Your holiday begins at the charming Château de la Redortière close to the Lacs de Haute Charente.Enjoy home cooking and cheese made at the château’s own farm.
  • Day 2 Massignac to Montbron - 28 miles (44.8km)
    • Circle the lakes nature reserve, the source of the River Charente, stopping at a leisure beach before lunch in Massignac. In the afternoon, ride through the rolling countryside before the long descent to the delightful Château de Lavaud with a heated pool.
  • Day 3 Day trip to La Rochefoucauld - 26 miles (41.6km)
    • An easy ride partly along a converted railway line to the pretty town of La Rochefoucauld with its picturesque château and cobble bridge over the Tardoire river. Return along a river valley road to Château Lavaud.
  • Day 4 Montbron to Oradour-sur-Vayres - 25 miles (40km)
    • Climb into Rouzede and descend to the River Tardoire. Pass peaceful small lakes to St Mathieu for lunch or shop for a picnic to enjoy by the lake. A steady climb brings you to Oradour and the Hostellerie le Bergerie chambre d’hôte.
  • Day 5 Day trip to Châlus - 25 miles (40km)
    • You pass the impressive Château de Montbrun before reaching Châlus and the little castle during the siege of which Richard the Lionheart was fatally wounded. Follow the voie-verte cycle track back to Oradour.
  • Day 6 Oradour to Rochechouart - 22 miles (35.2km)
    • Cycle through peaceful countryside to St Laurent and on to St Auvent for lunch. Pass the Château de Saint Auvent and continue to the town of rochechouart with its impressive castle perched on a cliff and an unusual church with a twisted spire. Stay at the delightful town centre chambre d’hôte La Roseraie.

    • Lavaud is a 19th Century château in 10 acre park and farmland bordering the Tardoire river. The château sits a few hundred yards outside the small 12th century town of Montbron, between the regions of Charente and the Périgord.
