Rail Travel

Outward: Depart St Pancras International, change trains in Lille Europe and again in Narbonne, arrive Carcassonne. Overnight B&B in Carcassonne giving you the next morning to explore this historic walled town before catching the local train to Quillan.

Return: Depart Foix, change trains Toulouse, arrive Paris, change stations, arrive St Pancras International late evening.

  • Day 1 Arrival
    • Arrive Quillan and settle into the 3-star hotel, Hôtel La Chaumière ... time to explore before dinner.
  • Day 2 Quillan to Puivant - 13 miles (20.8km)
    • Walk to the village of Nébias and continue along the Cathar footpath to Puivert and its splendid 13th century Château of the Troubadours. Tonight stay in a simple chambre d’hôte located close to the lake, ideal for a quick swim, eat ‘en famille’ with other guests.
  • Day 3 Puivant to Belcaire - 13 miles (20.8km)
    • Through the heart of the thick fir tree forests of Escale and Picaussel and out on to the airy plateau of Sault using the ancient path to the valley of Aude and the Corbières region. Stay in the mountain chalet style Hôtel Bayle.
  • Day 4 Belcaire to Montségur - 11.5 miles (18.4km)
    • The path takes you down through the impressive Gorge de Frau (Gorge of Fear!) to the Ariège before arriving in Montségur, the heart of Catharism. Stay for two nights at a welcoming and comfortable chambre d’hôte.
  • Day 5 Day walk from Montségur - 7.5 miles (12km)
    • An evocative walk past ancient terraces with panoramic views of the famous Pog de Montségur, the last Cathar strong hold - the ancient Château de Montségur perches high on the top, a hard climb but worth it for the views.
  • Day 6 Montségur to Roquefixade - 11.5 miles (18.4km)
    • The trail winds its way to the village of Montferrier, crossing the Modini forest before reaching the Pyrenean walled village of Roquefixade. Stay at the Relais des Pogs.
  • Day 7 Roquefixade to Foix - 12 miles (19.2km)
    • Superb terrain with stunning views as the trail follows a high ridge to the small town of Foix nestling in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Foix is dominated by the three towers of its chateau. Stay at the 3-star Hôtel Lons.
  • Day 8 Departure
    • Either depart by rail from Foix or by car transfer back to Quillan.
