Stevenson Trail 2nd Stage Walking Holiday

Follow the Pilgrims Way, perhaps combining both stages (13 nights)

Stevenson Trail 2nd StageEnlarge

The walk is moderate, with a few long climbs. Conditions underfoot are good, well drained, though often rocky. The landscape is ever-changing, tiny villages, valleys and woodland give way to desolate boulder-strewn plains.

  • Day 1 Arrival Chasseradès
    • The Chaptal family run the charming Hôtel des Sources and the restaurant serves great meals on the terrace.
  • Day 2 Chasseradès to Le Bleymard - 9 miles (14.4km)
    • After passing through the little village of L’Estampe you climb the densely wooded hill of oulet. This is the beginning of the Cévennes.
  • Day 3 Le Bleymard to Pont de Montvert - 11 miles (17.6km)
    • Climb the Finiels summit for impressive views, sometimes as far as the Mediterranean. Pont de Montvert has many fine 16th century houses built on rocks above the waters.
  • Day 4 Pont de Montvert to Florac - 10-16 miles (16-25.6km)
    • Most of today’s walk is along the Bouges ridge with views across the Cévennes. Florac spans the confluence of the Tarnon and the Tarn.
  • Day 5 Florac to Cassagnas - 10 miles (16km)
    • You quickly find yourself in the steep, red and rocky sided Mimente valley, which is quite dramatic. The tiny village of Cassagnas has a permanent population of 20 people! You stay in an old railway station.
  • Day 6 Cassagnas to St. Germain de Calberte - 11 miles (17.6km)
    • You can, if you wish, detour up Mont Mars for a view over this heavily forested area. There are many chestnut groves, once the staple diet of the population.
  • Day 7 St. Germain de Calberte to St. Jean du Gard - 13 miles (20.8km)
    • Some of the walk is spent on the paved road ‘Corniche des Cevennes’, built for the military during the reign of Louis XIV. As you descend from the Cévennes into the Midi, you see the changes in the landscape and on reaching the lowest part of the walk you realise you are now in the land of the grape!
