Outward: Depart St Pancras International station, change stations in Paris and trains at Clermont Ferrand, arrive Arvant or Brioude station late afternoon. Taxi transfer from station to hotel included.
Return: Taxi transfer to Brioude or Arvant station included, change trains at Clermont Ferrand and stations in Paris, arrive St Pancras International station late evening.
- Day 1 Arrival Hôtel La Sapinière, Brioude
- Brioude makes a great base for the start of the holiday. Within the town you'll find an ancient church dating from the 12th century, and on market day you can purchase local delicacies for an interesting picnic.
- Day 2 Auzon - Day trip from Brioude - 16 miles (25.6km)
- A gentle day, you’ll cycle along well kept lanes following the river Allier up and then down the valley. Stop at the pretty village of Lamothe for croissants or buy a picnic to take to one of the little beaches on the river. After a break visit the striking romanesque church at Auzon.
- Day 3 Blesle - Day trip from Brioude - 37 miles (59.2km)
- Listed as one of the ‘most beautiful villages in France’ you won’t be disappointed. After a hilly approach, Blesle rewards your efforts with its undeniable charm. Ancient stone buildings, little streets and colourful flowers create a special ambience. You can modify the route, but
on the whole, today’s ride will be moderate in grade.
- Day 4 Brioude to Reilhac - 20 miles (32km)
Follow the River Allier south through a gorge and the villages of Villeneuve and Lavoute Chilhac. To spend the next two nights in a modern 2-star hotel offering some great regional cuisine.
- Day 5 Reilhac to Chavaniac - 22 miles (35.2km)
- A twenty mile round trip over rolling countryside - you might catch a glimpse of a Red Kite hovering overhead. Take time to explore the delightful gardens at Château Lafayette.
- Day 6 Reilhac to Brioude - 20 miles (32km)
- Back along the Allier Valley to Brioude, perhaps cross to the opposite side of the river to explore some new countryside on your way back to La Sapinère.
- Day 7 Day trip from Brioude to Chavaniac-Lafayette
- Take your bike on the train to Chavaniac Lafayette and cycle back through the delightful valley, taking in medieval castles, picturesque villages and maybe the Museum of the Resistance. The Senouire River meets the Allier and following its course makes a pleasant and interesting ride.
