- Day 1 Arrival Rochefort
Arrive in the historic river side port of Rochefort where La Fayettes flagship L’Hermione is being reconstructed and settle in at the delightful La Corderie Royale. This evening enjoy a meal in their gourmet restaurant with lovely views across the Charente River. HB
- Day 2 Day trip Ile d’Oléron
Drive 10 miles south to seaside Marennes and onto the
Ile d’Oléron where sea, sand, pine and vine combine to provide unique sights and smells. Taste and learn all about ‘Spéciale de clair’ and ‘Fine de clair’ oysters known as Queen of the French Coast. Make your way back to your Rochefort hotel in time for a swim in the hotel pool before heading off to one of the many restaurants in the town. B&B
- Day 3 Day trip Ile d’Aix and Ile de Ré
Head for Fouras and a 30 minute ferry crossing to Ile d’Aix, the only island in the Charente-Maritime that is still only reached by boat. Just 3 km long with 7 km of coast, this tiny island has an impressive landscape: sandy beaches, cliffs, pine forests, tamarisks and marshes. Visit the mother of pearl museum where the story of this rare substance will be told by the last mother of pearl maker
in France.After lunch drive 35 miles up the coast past La Rochelle to visit the delightful Ile de Ré - sheltered by the Gulf Stream the island has the perfect climate to slowly mature the vines in the Charentais sun and it is certainly worth visiting the wine cellar of the Coopérative des Vignerons at Bois-Plage. Here you can also try the sweet Pineau des Charentes - liquid sunshine! Wander along the harbouror laze on a sandy beach.Return to Rochefort and your final night. B&B
