Expert Advice

Bob Blackstock has worked as our rep in the Loire Valley for three seasons, taking care of every single one of our customers who has chosen to walk or cycle in this enchanting region. His time out there has led to him becoming a dab hand at dishing out helpful hints to those who may be a little unsure as to what to expect on one of our holidays.

Below, Bob has compiled a helpful list of things to think about.

Travel – the French rail system is modern, clean and runs to time, so it is worth considering as a relaxing start to you holiday experience.

Suitcases – It is better to use two small cases rather than one large, as our representatives have to manhandle these between hotels and there are health and safety issues to consider.

Special Diets – French hotels are not brilliant at catering for vegetarians, however we have managed to cater for your needs and others such as gluten free or avoidance of dairy products. If you do have any special dietary requirements it is important to let us know but also essential to discuss menu choices as soon as you arrive at each hotel.

Weather – In central France the weather can be mixed and evenings may be cool in early or late season, whilst showers are usually short but heavy. We recommend a lightweight cagoule to carry with you, and pack a spare pair of shorts or trousers for the next day. We find most hotels helpful in drying clothes overnight should the need arise.

Panniers – Most of our cycles are fitted with panniers but some of our French providers use mountain bikes so it is best to take a small rucksack to carry just basic essentials but bear in mind that anything too heavy creates a bad balance when cycling.

Water – In most areas French tap-water is probably safer to drink than in UK.
For hygiene reasons we do not provide water bottles on the bikes but you can take your own bottle with its bracket to mount on our bike frame.

Fitness – You don’t need to be super fit to enjoy our holidays. Generally they are designed with just half a day cycling or walking and a half-day sightseeing. Many are suitable for those with no previous experience.

Helmets – Wearing a safety helmet has less to do with using busy roads but more to do with an unlucky fall. Although our reps do have some that you can hire for £1 a day, as they must be a good fit, we recommend that you bring your own.
