Cycling in France

At Belle France, we offer independent cycling holidays for everyone. Carefully selected routes allow you to discover France's most beautiful scenery for yourself.
We've carefully planned our holidays to ensure you'll experience up close the beauty of the real France - the sights, the atmosphere, even smells that you would miss from a car. France has a wonderful network of minor roads and cycle tracks, with little or no traffic, so even the most inexperienced cyclist can comfortably pedal along at a leisurely and carefree pace. Choose any of the quiet D-roads and you really can't go wrong, with a crumbling farmhouse, elegant château, sleepy village or rolling landscape at every turn.

There's no need to worry about carrying your luggage, as it's all transferred for you and will be awaiting your arrival at your next hotel. So whilst you experience the satisfaction of exploring France at your own pace, under your own steam, we'll take care of all the arrangements for you - all you have to do is pedal.

Find your cycling Holiday by Region

Our bikes - everything you need

All our bikes are prepared in advance and you can hire cycle helmets for £1 a day. Simply provide us with your height and inside leg measurement and your bike will be awaiting your arrival. Our bikes are usually hybrids - a cross between tourer and mountain bike that's perfect for the distances and terrain you'll be covering. The saddles are made wide for touring, but you can also bring your own if you wish. We also provide you with panniers to carry your picnic and supplies for the day.

We'll provide you with a repair kit containing a spare inner tube and puncture repair kit. If your bike breaks down, our local representative will come out with a replacement, enabling you to continue your holiday without delay. However, you will need to know how to repair your own puncture!

If you're travelling by car and wish to bring your own bike, this will reduce the cost of your cycling holiday by £4 per day.

What to expect on our cycling holidays

We don't consider any of our cycling holidays to be too much of a challenge; every day has a carefully planned itinerary; the pace at which you travel is up to you. Cycling distances between hotels range between 10 and 40 miles, perfectly manageable considering average cycle speed is between 6 to 8 miles per hour - or much faster downhill or on the flat with the wind behind you! If faced with a climb, you can always get off and push for a bit - that's what we do!

Most of our cycling holidays are circular; you cycle from hotel to hotel, with one or two nights at each hotel before moving on. If you'd prefer to stay in one place for the duration then we have a couple of fixed base options available too. All of our cycling holidays are self-guided, which means that you'll be cycling independently at your own pace.

A Few Pointers

  • Please remember that a long flat run on a hot day can be more tiring than a short hill where you get off and push.
  • Distances between hotels are always shorter in hilly areas and you should not choose a holiday solely on the basis of mileage.
  • We do not suggest hard routes. But if you do want to cycle the steep mountain path identified on your map, then feel free!
